Revered as one of the greatest political minds, cultural icons and spiritual leaders in the history of modern India, the history of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar remains virtually unknown to the West. Scholar, political leader, author of the Indian Constitution and champion of Dalit rights, he was one of the first "untouchables" to attain a college education. Ambedkar's death in 1956 left the Dalit community(500,000 of whom converted to Buddism on a single day under his guidance) without a leader. Today, in the face of continued caste-based injustices, many Dalits feel orphaned, torn between their faith in a leader who has left them and their fear of a future without change. |
